Fast, affordable healthcare in China — guided by someone who’s lived it

In November 2025, tired of waiting for the NHS, I flew to China with chronic stomach issues. Within 12 days I had seen a specialist, had an endoscopy, received a full biopsy analysis, and left with a diagnosis and treatment plan.

My story went viral. Featured in The Economist, The Sun, and the Daily Mail. Since then, hundreds of people have asked me how to do the same. Now I’m making it possible for you.

I’m Amie — British, based in China, married to a Chinese national. I don’t just know the system. I’ve been through it.

Why China

What makes China different

Same-day appointments
Chinese hospitals move at a pace the NHS cannot match. Specialist appointments are typically available within 24–48 hours. No referral chains, no months of waiting.
Efficient diagnosis
Tests are processed in hours, not weeks. Blood work, ultrasound, and CT results — often on the same day. You leave knowing something, not waiting to find out.
Specialist-first care
In China you see the right specialist from the start. No GP gatekeeping. No running in circles. You get in front of the doctor who actually knows your condition.
Genuinely affordable
Medical costs in China are a fraction of UK private care — and a world apart from US pricing. World-class treatment without the world-class bill.

Services

Choose your level of support

All services require you to travel to China. The difference between them is how much support you receive when you get there, and how much of the preparation I handle for you beforehand.

Medical investigation & assistance

Full support — Amie + dedicated Beijing contact
Priced on enquiry
For people with a specific medical issue that needs proper investigation. Endoscopy, colonoscopy, oncology referral, orthopaedic consultation — this is the route I took myself when I flew to China alone with no support and no idea how the system worked. I navigated it independently so that you don’t have to. Your dedicated Beijing contact accompanies you to every appointment, handles all translation, and makes sure nothing gets missed. Amie coordinates everything from start to finish. Pricing depends on your situation, length of stay, and complexity of care needed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit a hospital in China on a tourist visa?
Yes. You do not need a special visa to access medical care in China as a tourist. A standard tourist visa is sufficient for hospital visits, consultations, and procedures.
Do I need to speak Chinese?
For on-site services, your dedicated Beijing contact handles all communication and translation — you don’t need any Chinese at all. For remote services, it depends on which hospital department you attend. International and VIP departments are accustomed to foreign patients and have some English support. Standard public hospital departments are conducted entirely in Chinese, so you would need translation software or a companion who speaks the language. I’ll always recommend the most appropriate option for your situation and tell you exactly what to expect before you go.
Who will be with me in China?
For on-site services, you’ll be met and accompanied by your dedicated Beijing contact — a fluent English-speaking local professional who is part of the AmieInChina team and reports directly to Amie. As someone with a deep knowledge of Beijing’s hospitals and healthcare system, they are the most effective person to have beside you in that environment. Amie remains your direct point of contact throughout and you’ll have her details for anything that comes up.
How quickly can an appointment be arranged?
This is one of China’s great advantages. A specialist appointment can typically be arranged within 24–48 hours, and a Health MOT can be booked within 24 hours. The lead time you actually need is about your own travel planning — sorting flights, time off work, and accommodation. Once you know your travel dates, get in touch and I’ll take care of the rest.
Will my travel insurance cover treatment in China?
It depends on your policy. Most comprehensive travel insurance covers emergency and unexpected medical treatment abroad. Planned procedures are often excluded. Check your policy directly and contact your insurer before booking. I can provide documentation of services upon request.
How do I pay at the hospital?
Chinese hospitals do not reliably accept international bank cards directly. Payment is made through WeChat Pay or Alipay — China’s two main payment platforms. Before you travel, you’ll need to download one of these apps and link your international card to it. This is straightforward to set up but essential to do in advance. I’ll send you a step-by-step guide as part of your pre-trip preparation so you’re not caught out on arrival.
When will I receive my Health MOT results?
Health MOT results are typically delivered within a few days to one week. Your results will be translated into English and sent to you electronically, with a clear explanation of what they mean. You don’t need to be in China to receive them.
What is a VIP or international department?
Many major Chinese hospitals have dedicated international or VIP departments designed for foreign patients. Staff often speak English, wait times are shorter, and the environment is more straightforward to navigate. These departments cost more than standard outpatient care but remain significantly cheaper than UK private healthcare. For most of our clients, this is the most practical and comfortable option.
