Fast, affordable healthcare in China – guided by someone who’s lived it

My Chinese medical journey..

In November 2025, tired of waiting for the NHS, I flew to China to investigate chronic stomach issues. In the time it would have taken to secure a GP appointment in the UK, I flew to China, consulted with a specialist, and underwent a sedated endoscopy. They took biopsies of my stomach, analysed it in the lab, and came back to me with a full diagnosis and treatment plan. All in just 12 days, at a total cost of £299.

This could be your experience too

My story went viral in both the UK and China. Featured in The Economist, The Sun, China Daily, The Global Times and more. Since then, hundreds of people have asked me how to do the same. Now I want to help others access the same care I received.

FAQ

China has introduced visa-free entry for many countries, including the UK, for stays of up to 30 days – which is more than enough for most medical visits. If your country is included in the visa-free programme, you can travel without any visa application at all. For those who do need a visa, a standard tourist visa is all that’s required, there is no such thing as a medical visa for China.

I’ve written a full guide for how to apply for a Chinese tourist visa on my website here if you need it.

Standard NHS health checks in the UK cover basic markers like blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, and blood sugar, and its usually only available to those aged 40 to 74 years old. A comprehensive private health check from providers like Bupa or Nuffield vary from £500 to £1,500 and still only covers a fraction of what a Chinese health check clinic offers. In countries like the US, equivalent testing can run into thousands of dollars.

In China, healthcare is much more proactive, and annual comprehensive health checks are a normal part of day-to-day life. They are run by dedicated specialist clinics and are designed to cover the whole body in a single visit. The ethos in China is ‘it’s better to catch something early, then find out when it’s too late’. A standard package typically includes full blood panels, urine analysis, ECG, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound, and more, with a full report delivered within 1 week. The difference isn’t just cost, it’s the depth, efficiency, and the infrastructure built specifically around this type of care.

Depending on department, a specialist appointment can typically be arranged within 24 to 48 hours, and a full body health check can be booked within 48 hours.

For on-site services, your dedicated local contact handles all communication and translation throughout – you won’t need any Chinese at all.

For remote services, it depends on which hospital department you attend. International and VIP departments are accustomed to foreign patients and have some English support. Standard public hospital departments are conducted entirely in Chinese, so you would need translation software or a companion who speaks the language. We’ll always recommend the most appropriate option for your situation and tell you exactly what to expect before you go.

Most major Chinese hospitals have dedicated international or VIP departments designed for foreign patients. Staff often speak English, wait times are shorter, and the environment is more straightforward to navigate. These departments cost more than ‘standard’ public hospitals in China, but remain significantly cheaper than private healthcare at home. For most of our clients, this is the most practical and comfortable option.

For on-site services, you’ll be met and accompanied by your dedicated local contact, a fluent English-speaking professional who is part of the AmieInChina team and reports directly to Amie. They have a deep knowledge of the local hospitals and healthcare system and are the most effective person to have beside you in that environment. Amie remains your direct point of contact throughout and you’ll have her contact details should you need to speak with her.

Absolutely – you’re welcome to bring a partner, friend, or family member. Many clients find it reassuring to have someone with them, particularly for more involved appointments. There’s no additional charge for a companion.

Once your appointment is booked, we’ll send you a full pre-trip information pack covering everything you need to know.

In general: bring your passport as it’s required for hospital registration in China, download WeChat Pay or Alipay and link your international card before you travel, avoid eating or drinking anything other than water for at least 8 hours before a blood test or full health check, and bring any existing medical records, scan results, or test reports that are relevant to your situation. The more information you arrive with, the more useful your consultation will be.

Chinese hospitals do not reliably accept international bank cards. Payment is made through WeChat Pay or Alipay, China’s two main payment platforms. Before you travel, you’ll need to download one of these apps and link your international card to it. This is straightforward to set up but essential to do in advance. We’ll send you a step-by-step guide as part of your pre-trip preparation so you’re not caught out on arrival.

It depends on your situation. Travel insurance that covers planned medical procedures abroad can be difficult to find and often costs more than the treatment itself, as China’s healthcare costs are genuinely very affordable. That said, comprehensive travel insurance is always worth considering for other travel risks such as delays, cancellations, lost luggage, and emergency care unrelated to your planned treatment. It’s entirely your call.

Your dedicated local contact is with you throughout every appointment and is your first point of call if anything unexpected happens on the day. Amie is also available directly throughout your stay. Chinese hospitals are well equipped to handle complications, you are, after all, already in a medical setting. For emergencies, China’s emergency services number is 120.

There’s no requirement to inform your doctor before travelling to China for medical care – it’s entirely your choice. That said, if you have existing conditions or are on medication, it’s worth making sure your medical history is accessible in an emergency.

For many conditions, resolution is entirely achievable in China. If you need medication, Chinese pharmacies are well-stocked, and your doctor will prescribe enough for a full course which you can complete at home.

For more complex situations, you won’t be leaving empty-handed. Your translated results, test reports, and specialist notes are documents you can take anywhere. Many clients find that arriving home with concrete evidence of a diagnosis puts them in a much stronger position, rather than starting from scratch and trying to persuade a doctor to authorise tests without prior evidence.
